This pattern was a response to an interview assignment for the role of Surface Pattern Designer at Marcel Wanders which resulted in receiving the job offer. The task was to create a pattern using either geometric or floral motifs.
I opted for the geometric style because of my bold personal style, and I created a flexibly usable pattern - the response to the brief originated from my personal interest in the built environment. I imagined this pattern to be used in a refurbishment project in one of the plenty of abandoned or suffering hotels on the British seaside. That’s where the elements come from: the late Victorian / Edwardian aesthetics, but to avoid playing on nostalgia, I decided to bring them to the 21st Century, which resulted in this intricate, almost industrial, futuristic look.
WHEN CREATING A PATTERN FOR AN INTERIOR DESIGN, I ALWAYS LOOK FOR A CONNECTION WITH THE BUILDING. IF OUR PURPOSE IS TO MAKE THE VISITOR FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS, THEN IT IS IMPORTANT TO SHOW WHAT’S BEAUTIFUL in WHERE THEY ARE.
